Reflecting on the Year that Was

Well here we are, 2021. We made it through the year that we thought would never end. I know that 2020 was a really tough year for many people, and we have been quick to wish the year away. But in saying that, I think that there is much to be gained from a year such as 2020, and in times that are uncertain, it always pays to find the silver lining – and therealways is one! As we reflect on the year that was, we realise just how many lessons we were gifted and how much we have to be grateful for.

There is a whole heap to unpack from this last year. Unexpected challenges just kept popping up, and it was completely impossible to plan anything or to prepare for how the year eventuated. Life has changed for every single one of us this year. It’s been totally different to anything else we have experienced. In saying that, I think it is all the more reason for us to reflect and clear out the space in time for a new year, new intentions, and new adventures. To find meaning in a chaotic year like this one, it is important to pause and reflect on how we have grown and what we have learnt in 2020.

When I think about the year that was, 3 key takeaways keep coming up for me:

  • Nurturing relationships and connection is quite possibly the most important thing we can do

  • Consistency of routines makes an immeasurable difference in my life

  • The simple fact that we are alive is magic in itself – let us never forget this

So now I ask you to do the same. Carve out some time for yourself, clear your schedule and take some time to reflect on 2020, the year that was. Here are some journal prompts to help you get started:

  • When you reflect on 2020, what 3 words sum up your experience?

  • What are you most proud of from this last year?

  • How did your relationships evolve?

  • What energised you? What drained you?

  • Think back to 12 months ago – what was your intention for the year ahead and how has it shown up this year?

  • What are you choosing to leave behind in 2020?

  • How did you show kindness to yourself this year? This could be nourishing your body, your spirit or your mind.

  • What patterns have continued to show up for you this year? What have you learnt from this? What do you now know you need to release?

  • What feelings are present for you now?

  • And of course, my favourite question – what are you most grateful for?

Welcome to 2021, my beautiful community. May this year be every bit as rich and wholesome as you deserve.
