11 Sustainable Mother’s Day Gift Ideas

Mother’s Day is rolling around fast and with only 10 days to go, I thought I’d pull together some ideas for you to gift your beloved Mum. This year it is more important than ever to be intentional with your gifting. We have started the year with a shocking series of events – the bushfires, storms and the corona pandemic, and in a way, it has served as a reminder that we need to be far more careful with this precious planet of ours.

As gifting can be a wasteful process, this is an area where you can show your intention and reduce your impact on the environment. The process is also a little different this year, with many of our favourite stores being closed for the moment.  However, there is still enough time to order a gift from your local store online, or even to make your own, DIY present. If you’re stuck for ideas, I’ve pulled together a list of presents that your Mum is sure to love!

Gift Voucher for the Beautician
We are all hanging out for our beauticians to reopen, and my bet is that your Mum is too. My eyebrows definitely need a touch up and I cannot wait for a facial! Not only is this a thoughtful gift for Mother’s Day, but it is also a fantastic way to support small businesses who are struggling through these hard times. For more ideas on how to support small businesses through the pandemic, check out my post.

A Piece of Jewellery
I love special, bespoke jewellery pieces and I know my Mum does as well. There are lots of incredible artists out there; one of my favourites is Bee Twomey, who makes handmade, abstract earrings. You can also check out YCL JewelsByCharlotte and Tree of Life for some gorgeous pieces.

Framed Photograph
Wilderness Productions is a small photography company started by 2 adventurers who have spent the last few years taking the most gorgeous pictures of underwater, marine life and wilderness landscapes. Their work is magical and would look great hanging on Mum’s wall. You can check them out here

Purse and Essential Oils Set
Young Living has come up with a Mother’s Day set that is spot on. It includes a gorgeous little purse which can hold 5 cards, 2 essential oils and a lip balm. It’s a perfect gift for someone who is passionate about using natural alternatives to support their health and the environment. I myself have found essential oils to be life changing – you can read my story here

Mother’s Day Cake
I would bet that every suburb has a kickass cake maker that could create a delectable creation for Mother’s Day, and also would love the support. A simple google search will do the trick. Some local sweet makers I love are Treat ‘Em and Vegan Sweet Cheeks.

Indoor Plant
Did you know that indoor plants, instead of just looking good, actually filter the air and reduce the toxins in your space? Plants are a perfect way to brighten up any space whilst improving the air quality of your home. Check out these 6 plants that are incredible toxin fighters – they’d make the perfect gift for Mother’s Day.

Ecofriendly Linen
If you thought your daily environmental impact started with your coffee cup, you can think again. Choosing linen that is ecofriendly means that they use less water during production, use no chemicals or dyes, and are sustainably made with materials that are good for the environment. There’s a bunch of local Aussie companies creating great products in this space – 3 that I love are EttitudeBhumi and Weft Textiles.

Outdoor Firepit
I recently found out that outdoor firepits are incredibly affordable and easy to access, considering that Bunnings has a whole range of them! Imagine cold winter nights snuggled up around a firepit stuffing your faces on vegan s’mores.  It’s a gift that any Mum would love.

Ecofriendly Clothing
Many people are stuck in the endless cycle that is fast fashion. Help your Mum break that cycle this Mother’s Day by gifting her a piece of eco-friendly, ethically made clothing. I love the clothing by Indigo Luna and Hara the Label, but there are so many ethical brands out there.

Sustainable Surfboard
Does your Mum love to be outdoors? Why not gift her a beautifully crafted, sustainable surfboard. We don’t often think about surfboards in terms of their environmental impact, but polystyrene foam boards don’t last very long and can take hundreds of years to break down. Check out these 5 surfboard companies making waves in the sustainability arena.

Get Creative
With all this extra time on our hands, why not tap into your creative side and make Mum something for Mother’s Day. There are so many awesome things we can make, and lots of them don’t even require leaving the house (let’s keep it within covid-19 protocol). Why not try these DIY bathbombssugar body scrub, a delicious dessert, take her out for a trail walk or make her up some beautiful, natural perfume rollers.
